Diamond Certificate
A diamond certificate serves as a written document that authenticates the diamond's reputed suitability for a specific purpose. The certificate describes the diamond's fair market value as well as its specifications.
Independent gemological laboratories around the world prepare diamond certificates. Some well-known grading laboratories are: American Gem Society (AGS), International Gemological Institute (IGI), European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), Gemological Institute of America (GIA and Global Gemological Laboratory (GGL). It would be wise to do some research in order to get a better understanding of these laboratories.
A diamond certificate is also known as a diamond grading report or as a diamond quality report as it provides information on the diamond's characteristics. It includes an accurate grading of the diamond's properties and includes an evaluation of the 4 C's- cut, clarity, color and carat weight. The certificate also includes the diamond's shape, dimensions, finish, symmetry, polish and its proportions. It also evaluates characteristics like the presence or absence of fluorescence, inclusions and treatment.
A diamond appraisal should not be mistaken as a diamond certificate. Any loose diamond, mounted stone or jewelry can be appraised. Unlike a diamond certificate, it does not cover an extensive report regarding the diamond. The appraisal only designates the estimated dollar value of the stone.
The diamond certificate helps the customer in preventing fraud since it proves the authenticity of the diamond and describes exactly what the customer is paying for. The certificate also acts as a form of identification for the diamond.
Diamond Grading is not an exact science, so every consumer must be aware that grading accuracy has the possibility to be different if sent to various gemological laboratories. Graduate Gemologists use their own judgment during diamond analysis. Appraising is the act of evaluating the quality of a diamond; it will vary from one appraiser to another. Formal education is not needed when dealing with diamond appraisal -it can be done by anyone, experienced or not. Therefore, a consumer should be wise in choosing the right diamond and making sure that its authenticity is documented.
