Diamond Shapes

There is no known document that can verify who had first attempted to cut a diamond. However, it is believed that diamond cutting began in India and was first formally established in Europe. The most popular diamond shape is the round brilliant followed by the princess, but due to more advanced methods, shaping diamonds into "fancy" shapes have become more fashionable in recent years. Round Brilliant

Round brilliant diamonds are classic cuts that have dominated the market for a long time. Some say that the round shape is a symbol of endless love between two people as there is no beginning and no end to a circle. Currently, round brilliants are the common and oftentimes first choice for diamond engagement rings and jewelry in general.

Oval

Oval shapes are cousins of the traditional round brilliant. A bit elongated, oval shapes tend to look slightly larger than they really are, a definite advantage if they are on the small side.

Cushion

The cushion shape is very similar to other shapes that are square or slightly rectangular, except it tends to have rounded corners. The brilliance and sparkle of the diamond is undeniable and makes an extremely attractive engagement ring.

Princess

The princess cut is usually square in shape, although it can sometimes be rectangular. The princess shape is best when used on deep stones and due to its geometry, it hides imperfections of a diamond better than other shapes.

Emerald

Emerald cut diamonds have a tendency to look glassy, but it is exactly this effect that makes it look very elegant. However, due to the lack of facets on an emerald cut, inclusions are more visible.

Asscher

The asscher cut diamond is very similar to the emerald cut, although more square in shape than rectangular. Its facets are cut in the same step-like pattern as the emerald and retains the same elegant look.

Radiant

Radiant shapes are exactly what their names refer to: radiant. They have the brilliance of rounds, but their shape reflects that of a princess cut. Either way, radiant cut diamonds make lovely diamond engagement rings.

Heart

Heart shaped diamonds are usually the choice of the ultimate romantic. Their distinctive shape makes them excellent for jewelry, from earrings to pendants to diamond engagement rings.

Trillion

Trillions are usually used as side stones and not as center stones. They complement square shaped diamonds best like princess and radiant cuts. The rare Moussaieff Red is a trillion and weighs 5.11 carats.

Marquise

Trends come and go, as is the case with the marquise shape. Said to be named after the smile of the Marquis of Pompadour, the marquise shape resembles a pear but with two pointed ends. A bit on the unconventional side, a marquise center stone would still make a beautiful engagement ring.

Pear

Pear shapes and fancy shapes in general have become increasingly popular in recent years. Pears, with their unique shape and sparkle, would be gorgeous set in any type of jewelry.
