Jewelry Manufacturing
The jewelry manufacturing process is an intricate one, taking hours upon hours to create beautiful pieces of jewelry for personal use. We at Bacci Diamonds pride ourselves in our ability to create gorgeous avant-garde and traditional designs as well as custom-made, handcrafted pieces. Our expert jewelers are able to make custom pieces and original Bacci designs employing the "lost wax casting" method, a process that takes considerable time and effort.
Our skilled artisans make models of the piece out of different materials, usually wax, using sketches and pictures of the desired piece. Once the design is finalized, a "master" rubber mold based on the model is created so that this piece can be recreated at any time. From this rubber mold, a wax mold is created as an intermediary for the finished product.
Wax wires, or sprues, are added to the wax and the entire thing is attached to a rubber base. This "wax tree" is placed inside a cylindrical container called an investment flask. A liquid, plaster-like substance called investment is poured into the container and allowed to harden. As the plaster substance hardens, the wax will make its imprint.
When this process is complete, the container is placed in an oven where it will be subjected to roughly 1300 degrees of heat. At this point, the wax is "lost" (hence the name) and molten gold, platinum, and at times even silver, is put into the hollow space where the wax resided. The metal will then be allowed to cool and take the form of the original wax carving. Once the metal cools, the investment surrounding it will be chipped away, revealing the beginning stages of the final piece. The casting, as the metal is called, will be polished to remove any rough edges and additional work is done to ensure its fit for the person who will eventually wear it. If it is not a customized piece, it will be in the standard size.
If the design calls for it, diamonds will be set into the piece and it will then undergo rhodium plating (if necessary) and a final polish. This long process results in some of the most gorgeous pieces of jewelry available.
